We’ve all heard about recycling, but have you ever stopped to think about how big a role it plays in protecting our environment and conserving natural resources? In a country like South Africa, where millions of tonnes of waste end up in landfills every year, recycling is more important than ever.
WHAT IS RECYCLING, REALLY?
Recycling is the process of taking materials that would otherwise be thrown away and turning them into new products. It reduces the need to extract, refine, and process raw materials, all of which pollute the air and water and contribute to climate change.
Common recyclable materials include:
– Paper and cardboard
– Glass bottles and jars
– Certain plastics
– Metals like tin and aluminium
– Garden waste (which can be composted)
THE BENEFITS OF RECYCLING
Reduces landfill waste: Landfills are filling up fast. Recycling helps divert waste away from these overflowing sites.
Saves energy: Recycling materials often uses far less energy than creating products from raw resources.
Creates jobs: The recycling industry provides employment in sorting, processing, and reusing materials.
Conserves resources: Recycling reduces the need for mining, logging, and other extractive industries.
WHAT NOT TO RECYCLE
Not everything belongs in the recycling bin. These items should not be placed with your recyclables:
Electronics or batteries (these need special drop-off points)
Food-soiled containers
Wet cardboard or paper
Broken glass (unless specified)
Plastic bags (unless collected separately)
EASY WAYS TO START RECYCLING AT HOME
Reuse what you can. Glass jars, plastic containers, and bags can have a second life.
Set up separate bins for paper, plastic, metal, and glass.
Rinse out containers to remove food residue.
Flatten cardboard boxes to save space.
RECYCLING IN SOUTH AFRICA: DID YOU KNOW?
South Africans generate over 122 million tonnes of waste annually.
Less than 10% of this is recycled.
Yet, a growing number of local initiatives are making it easier to recycle through community depots, skip hire, and green waste drop-offs.
EVERY BIT COUNTS
You don’t have to be perfect, but every small action makes a difference. Whether it’s separating your recyclables, supporting businesses that recycle, or educating friends and family, you’re playing your part.
